Are you an experienced project manager with a strong background in mechanical engineering and piping systems? Do you want to play a key role in shaping the future of fossil-free steel production? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you.
In the Transformation Office at SSAB Group level, we are a growing team of around 80 people responsible for planning and executing the construction of SSAB's new fossil-free steel mills. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the largest industrial transformations in the Nordics.
Becoming part of the SSAB family means joining a journey. A journey that we believe is essential for the sustainability of this planet. Steel has been one of the most important materials for developing our society and it will continue to be so. In the roofs over our heads, in the bridges connecting our cities and in the cars of tomorrow. At SSAB we are proud of our history and leadership in high-strength steel. But we are also aware that the production of steel is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world. That has to change. That is why we have developed the world's first fossil free steel production and has committed to becoming largely fossil-free. As part of SSAB you will be instrumental in realizing this goal and push for the green transformation of the whole steel industry.
About the position
As a Technical Discipline Manager within the Mechanical and Piping discipline, you are responsible for providing technical leadership and expertise within mechanical and piping systems and oversee that the technical elements of the discipline are consistently met. You will work in close collaboration with internal stakeholders, consultants, suppliers, project managers and other discipline leads to ensure delivery within safety, time, budget, and quality targets.
This position is a highly focused project execution role where your experience in coordinating complex technical deliveries and leading cross-functional project teams will be critical.
You will work across a wide technical scope, including fluid systems, heat transfer, and material performance in demanding industrial environments. Your understanding of mechanical equipment, piping layouts, and relevant codes and standards will be valuable in ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable solutions. The ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications, such as P&IDs and isometrics, is key, as is a pragmatic approach to problem-solving in the field.
Main responsibilities
Manage and coordinate mechanical and piping engineering scopes, including design reviews, procurement support, installation planning, and commissioning.
Ensure that project deliverables related to piping and mechanical systems meet technical specifications and overall project goals.
Collaborate with Project Managers and other discipline leads to secure alignment across disciplines.
Identify discipline-related risks and support development of mitigation strategies.
Track progress of mechanical and piping-related activities and report to project leadership.
Drive technical discussions with suppliers and consultants and provide input for contractual matters related to your scope.
Contribute to continuous improvement and incorporate lessons learned into project execution.

About You
We are looking for someone with solid project management experience in large industrial CAPEX projects, particularly with a focus on mechanical and piping systems.
A bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
Proven experience managing engineering and construction scopes related to piping and mechanical systems.
A good understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and material properties.
Basic knowledge of machine design and how components like pumps, heat exchangers, valves, and piping systems work and interact within a plant environment.
Familiarity with interpreting P&IDs, isometric drawings, and piping material specifications, as well as common piping components and layout principles.
An appreciation for relevant industry codes and standards, and awareness of safety and regulatory frameworks.
Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies. A formal project management certification is a strong plus.
Experience with procurement and technical coordination of equipment and service vendors.
Strong communication skills in English. Swedish or Finnish is a plus.
You are structured, hands-on, and solution oriented. You thrive in a fast-paced project environment and have a collaborative mindset.
