AstraZeneca is now looking to recruit a Principal Scientist with expertise in Peptide Chemistry to join the Medicinal Chemistry Department within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden
The Innovative Medicines (IMED) Biotech Unit of CVRM is one of AstraZeneca 's core therapy areas. We push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease. To realize our ambitions, we stay agnostic to molecular modality. We drive our pipeline and the areas of scientific leadership to a large extent in collaborations with world experts which provides you as a scientist with the unique opportunity to access the most advanced knowledge and opportunities to stay at the fore-front of science. The Medicinal Chemistry Department within the CVRM IMED is a critical player in the discovery and design of our drug molecules as well as in identifying and validating novel biological targets.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
This is a senior scientific role within the Medicinal Chemistry department. You will be an authority in peptide medicinal chemistry and are expected to develop and lead the science in the field, including linear, cyclic and stapled peptides and peptide conjugates. You will drive impact on multiple projects across the portfolio in all phases from target selection to drug candidate selection. There will be expectations on lab contribution and being part of the team delivery of peptides. The role holder will also provide discipline based scientific leadership and represent the department and AstraZeneca at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally.
Key Deliverables:
* Expand and further build our core peptide chemistry capability
* Responsible, together with the Medicinal Chemistry Leadership Team, for clear and compelling scientific strategy for peptide chemistry in both medicinal and synthetic chemistry
* Instrumental in delivering a portfolio of peptide projects and peptide-drug-conjugate projects for e.g. targeted drug delivery
* May lead collaborations and secure new collaborations in the area
Essential Requirements
This role requires a PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline, ideally with 10 or more years of post-doctoral research experience in drug discovery, preferentially from an industrial setting. You are recognised internationally within the field of peptide chemistry applied to drug discovery as evidenced by your external disclosures and publication record. You are also expected to have:
* Expert knowledge with proven track record of peptide design and synthesis
* Ability to identify, develop and apply new technologies and ways of working within peptide chemistry
* Very good influencing skills in order to build capability and implement improvements
* Very good knowledge of related disciplines including Drug Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics, Safety, Bioscience, Patent, Pharmaceutical Development
* Very good written and verbal communication skills, including presentation to senior leaders
* Excellent awareness of recent literature within field of expertise
* Strong ability to work collaboratively and build relationships
* Demonstrated scientific leadership through publishing in peer reviewed journals or presentations at internal/external conferences.
* We are looking for a highly self-motivated and scientifically driven individual with expertise in peptide chemistry that is capable of receiving and analyzing input from multiple disciplines.
