A position as a temporary researcher in soil science is available within the faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences at the Department of Soil and Environment, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. The Department is housed in the Soil-Water-Environment Centre and conducts research, environmental assessment and education for sustainable land use.
Duties:
Conduct research in soil science, with a focus on modelling the influence of biofuel extraction on the nutrient status and acidity of forest soils and runoff. The dynamic model HD-MINTEQ is used to estimate how different alternatives for harvesting and use of harvest residues for energy purposes affect the soil pH and the long-term supply of nitrogen and other nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. In the initial phase of the project, data from various field experiments are compiled in a form suitable for modelling. The results of the work are published internationally and presented on conferences and meetings where the strategy for biofuel extraction is discussed. The work is funded through a project granted by the Swedish Energy Agency and involves collaboration with several other researchers.
Qualifications:
The applicant should hold a PhD in soil science, geosciences, environmental assessment or equivalent, preferably with a focus on biogeochemistry in the soil-plant system. You should have previous experience of field work and laboratory work. Previous experience in using mathematical models for assessing the acidity of forest soils counts as a significant merit. A previous post-doc experience at another university than where the PhD was obtained, experience of research outside of academia and a good publication record, will be appreciated. The applicant should be fluent in spoken and written English. Interpersonal skills are important, including the ability to work within a research team as well as independently.
