Researcher: From correlations to explanations: towards a new European prehistory (COREX)
This position is funded by a recent EU Synergy grant awarded to Gothenburg, UCL and Copenhagen Universities. The person appointed will be a member of an international team developing interdisciplinary approaches to achieve the project's aims. The post is a full-time position available for 18 months in the first instance, starting in September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Department of historical studies, Gothenburg University, Sweden
The Department of Historical Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities. At the department, education and research are conducted within three disciplines: history, archaeology and classical archaeology and ancient history. Courses are offered at all levels, from the undergraduate to the doctorate level. Research takes place both within the individual disciplines and in larger inter- and transdisciplinary projects, with national and international collaboration an important element. The department currently has about 90 employees, including researchers, teachers, doctoral students and administrators. The department is centrally located in Gothenburg.
In archaeology, teaching and research addresses processes of change in human societies from ancient prehistory to modern times. Documentation and interpretation of the material record of human behaviour are in focus. Daily work is carried out in collaboration with the other disciplines at the department.

Synergy projects represent the top level of European Research Council funding, with a budget of EUR10 million over six years. In the project "From correlations to explanations: towards a new European prehistory (COREX)" geneticists and archaeologists from University College London (led by Mark Thomas and Stephen Shennan) join forces with archaeologists from Gothenburg (led by Kristian Kristiansen and Karl-Göran Sjögren), and geneticists from Copenhagen (led by Kurt Kjær, Eske Willerslev and Fernando Racimo). The project will combine prehistoric human genomic, archaeological, environmental, stable isotope and climate data to better understand the processes that shaped our biological and cultural past from the time of the first farmers to the Iron Age( between 6000 to 500 BC).
Duties
Main purpose of the job
To collaborate with other team members on Work Package 1, which aims to integrate existing and newly collected large-scale archaeological data, existing ancient genomes, dietary and mobility isotope results, land cover inferred from pollen diagrams, and new eDNA results. This will provide the basis for exploring the relations between patterns in these different phenomena and modelling how small-scale processes can generate large-scale patterns in genetic and cultural data.
Specifically, to assist in creating geo-referenced datasets of botanical data and contributing to data analysis.
Duties and responsibilities
The appointee will work with other team members to develop appropriate database structures and data description protocols for the coding of faunal information.
Identify relevant published and online datasets for inclusion in the database, carry out agreed data coding procedures and, in collaboration with the project database coordinator, enter them into the database, ensuring that they are geo-referenced.
Collaborate with other team members in carrying out data analyses, and contributing to papers.
Take part in regular project meetings, online and in person in London, Gothenburg and Copenhagen.
Qualifications
• PhD in archaeology or archaeobotany with a focus on the European Neolithic or Bronze Age
• Experience of working with quantitative archaeological data
• Basic IT skills, particularly database management
• Knowledge of European languages other than English and Swedish is desirable
Employment
Type of employment: 18 months. Extent: 100% (full-time). Location: Department of Historical Studies, Gothenburg University. Starting in September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
