Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets
Job assignments
This project aims to decipher how yeast MAPK signaling impinge on protein quality control and vesicle trafficking, with special emphasis on aggregation of misfolded proteins, transport of protein aggregates to protein quality control compartments in the cells, and the asymmetrical inheritance of aggregates during cell division. Further, the project will analyze how cellular aging is affecting the activity of MAPK signaling and how this, in turn, may influence COPII-dependent trafficking and the buildup of cytotoxic aggregates, including model disease proteins of human neurological disorders, during cellular aging.
The project consists of research and supervision. The research entails in-depth analysis of yeast signaling and protein aggregation using molecular, genetic, and biochemical tools. Microscopy including microfluids allowing single-cell, as well as, ensemble analysis is a prominent part of the assignment. The project will also include the construction of new yeast strains suitable for microscopic analysis of protein aggregation.
Qualifications
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for the position. We are looking for a scholar with well-documented merits in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) molecular biology, including genetics and strain constructions. The successful applicant should have experience in microscopy including microfluidics and single-cell analysis. Documented (peer-reviewed original papers) expertise in working with yeast MAPK signaling pathways, Syntaxin 5-dependent trafficking, and protein quality control/protein aggregation is considered advantageous.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) full-time for 13 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
