Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology
We are looking for a motivated researcher eager to take the next step in developing bio-based adhesive systems for the wood industry. Here, you will have the opportunity to explore new synthesis methods and biopolymer modifications, collaborate within the pioneering BioGlue Competence Center, and contribute to solutions that can replace fossil-based materials. Are you ready to make a difference for both science and the environment?
About the position
The research for alternatives to replace fossil fuel-based materials in the industry with bio-based, sustainable and efficient materials has become predominant in today's research field. This is particularly true in the wood industry, which consumes large quantities of formaldehyde and other fossil-based adhesives for furniture and building components production. Significant research is conducted in biobased adhesives systems, especially at a fundamental level, to find new suitable biopolymers or green modification processes with low environmental impact. New functionalisation paths of biopolymers need to be explored to suit wood adhesive applications.

The Researcher will be part of the Fibres and Wood Composites group at SLU in campus Ultuna, and will cooperate with other co-workers in exploring new modification methods of biopolymers for wood adhesive applications. Methods that have gained interest in other research fields, e.g. the production and modification of nano-fillers or carbon-based materials are promising candidates. In parallel, a multiscale characterization of the modified biopolymers will be performed to study the treatment's effects on their chemistry, micro-structure, morphology and effective use in adhesive formulations. Responsibilities include participation in other projects of the group, projects' reporting, laboratory duties, fund raising, supervision, and authoring of publications. The Researcher is aslo expected to interact within the BioGlue Centre of Excellence with stakeholders in the sector and universities in the area of bio-adhesives

Your profile
Applicants must have a PhD in materials science and technology or equivalent related discipline. A track record of participation in research projects on bio-based adhesives is necessary. Experience with polysaccharides characterisation and modification is meriting. The applicant should be able to work independently and should have good communication skills and proven skills in both oral and written scientific English. Proven ability to apply for external research funding is meriting.

About us
The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) is part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, has about 50 employees and is located in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department carries out high-quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an essential resource. The primary focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified/processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes. In contrast, forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology, with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro levels, wood adhesives, and composites, as well as accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.
