The arena
We are looking for an experienced Laboratory Animal Veterinarian who will contribute to the veterinary input to large multi-disciplinary research projects or will lead smaller ones. In this role your principal focus is on partnering and collaboration with research groups to develop and refine improved animal models and methods. You will be a Leader and role model for regional veterinary colleagues. Provide advice, training and technical guidance to technicians, scientists, and veterinary colleagues on animal health and welfare, laboratory animal science and legislative compliance. You may supervise or manage veterinary nurses and technicians.
The role
Has detailed knowledge of animal models in use across the business and more broadly in the sector, with in depth understanding of how in vivo research methods support other methods. Able to critically evaluate animal models and research needs, driving development of new methods and refinement of existing methods.
May undertake own research programmes in support of improvements to in vivo methods or refinements in animal care and welfare.
May contribute expert knowledge to a Company strategy on the 3Rs.
Will have an expert knowledge of, and keep abreast of developments in, laboratory animal science and the ethical concepts involved, in order to help promote the raising of health, welfare and scientific standards.
May mange staff directly or may lead projects or teams, contributing to the motivation or development of others (including overseeing the quality of the work in progress), or contributing to the effective operation of the team through liaison and discussion with the team leader.
Will contribute to the identification of training needs and skills requirements in research, veterinary, and animal care functions, and will contribute to the development and delivery of such training.
Will assess and advise on significant areas of risk to business processes and reputation, and keep abreast of changing external standards and pressures such as political climate.
Will interact with key stakeholders to understand future strategy in respect to laboratory animal science and proposes or advises best practices to support the strategy. Will participate in meetings, committees or external groups to act as advisor on animal related issues, and develop the Company?s external reputation.
Will actively seek opportunities for external collaborations in animal model development and/or 3Rs initiatives, and will contribute to the Company?s external communications on these issues.
May fulfil a regulatory requirement such as Named Veterinary Surgeon or Attending Veterinarian in one or more territories.
May serve on a local or global ethical review committees (AWERB, IACUC, etc.) in one or more territories......
