Established in 1966, SIPRI is consistently ranked as one of the world's top think tanks. The institute is dedicated to independent research into peace, conflict and security and is known worldwide for its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook.
SIPRI is based in Stockholm with a presence in Beijing and an office in Washington, DC, and well-established, on-the-ground partnerships and operational networks across the globe. The staff of SIPRI is international and the working language is English.
In recent years SIPRI has considerably expanded its staff and budget while building a dynamic research and outreach agenda to illuminate and respond to the fast-changing international security order.
Following the appointment of its new Director, SIPRI is set to expand its activities in the field of conflict and development, subject to additional funds being acquired.
The strategic aim of the new programme is to establish SIPRI as a global leader in the analysis of the economics of security and development, building on the traditional strengths of SIPRI in the collection, analysis and dissemination of policy-relevant security data, especially in the area of arms transfers, arms production and military spending.
Building on these existing data-sets in related programmes, the focus of the new programme is expected to be on macro-economic and public finance issues of conflict and development.
Tasks and responsibilities:
The Programme Director will build up a small team of researchers and be responsible for
• developing and implementing an innovative and highly policy relevant research and outreach agenda in the field of the (macro-) economics of security and development;
• acquiring and implementing external research grants to fund these activities;
• overseeing the programme?s contribution to SIPRI?s publishing activities, including contributions to the SIPRI Yearbook;
• networking with key donors, policy makers and journalists to represent the programme?s research and policy findings; and
• contributing to overall SIPRI activities.
Responsibilities will be managed in cooperation with SIPRI senior management, the SIPRI team and SIPRI?s external partners.
Eligibility requirements:
SIPRI is looking for a dynamic and experienced researcher with the potential to develop and lead a world-class research programme. Applicants should have demonstrated strong leadership, fundraising and project-management skills. Prerequisites include a graduate degree (preferably a PhD) in economics or a related discipline as well as at least five years of post-doctoral (or equivalent) experience in the field of security and development as either a researcher or a practitioner.
The position also requires excellent communication skills and some experience in dealing with the media. Fluency in English is required; prior knowledge of Swedish is not. The conditions of the appointment will be negotiated individually.
To apply, send by email a short cover letter; your CV, including a list of publications; two samples of recent relevant work; a two-page proposal for the future agenda in research, fundraising and advisory work of this new programme; and the names of three potential referees.
Please send your application to
