We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to explore how changes in aircraft components and operations impact climate and environmental outcomes. The position is part of a dynamic research environment with strong links to both industry and European collaborative projects.

Project description

You will lead the development of a system-level noise model for ducted fans and propellers, with particular focus on the effects of boundary layer ingestion. The work also includes:

• Whole-aircraft noise prediction
• Flight trajectory optimization
• Environmental and societal impact assessment of future air traffic, including hydrogen and electric aircraft
• Integration of AI techniques into a multidisciplinary framework for aircraft and air traffic system modeling

You will build on an existing in-house modeling platform and are expected to contribute scientifically within the scope of an EU collaborative project as well as through your own research initiatives. Results should be disseminated through publications and presentations.

Research environment

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers conducts fundamental and applied research across all transport modes. The Division of Fluid Dynamics is one of seven divisions in the department and includes the Turbomachinery and Aeroacoustics research group. The group consists of two professors, one associate professor, one assistant professor, two researchers, and about ten PhD students.

Our research focuses on aircraft propulsion and covers:

• System-level assessments
• Engine concept development
• Component design and optimization (e.g., compressors, turbines, ducts, heat exchangers)
• Aeroacoustics and emissions modeling

Building on in-house tools, we increasingly explore multidisciplinary topics, such as air transport management and sustainable aviation.

Your profile

Required qualifications:

• PhD in aerospace engineering or a related field, with a focus on air traffic management or aircraft aeroacoustics, awarded no more than three years before the application deadline*
• Proficiency in programming (preferably Python)
• Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Additional merits that are considered:

• Advanced coursework in aircraft design, trajectory optimization, aeroacoustics, emissions, environmental impact, or AI
• Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration and non-academic partners
• Strong analytical ability, communication skills, and interest in bridging theory and application
• A solid publication record in relevant areas

* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.
