Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
We are seeking a highly motivated, academically excellent and proactive Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong background in innate immunity to study the relation between the immune system and brain health, and to further develop this research area in the newly established Anetta Härtlova lab (
https://wcmtm.gu.se/research-groups/hartlova-group) at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Gothenburg.
Subject area
Innate immunity, inflammation and ageing
Subject area description
The role of the immune system in age-related diseases is one of our major interests. In this project, we will investigate which immune pathways are overactivated in common diseases, how immune cell hyperactivity is linked to disease susceptibility, and how environmental and genetic factors influence immune activation and disease manifestation. This project is built on our recent work that unravel the role of Parkinson's risk gene factor, Leucine rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), in the innate immune signalling. (
http://emboj.embopress.org/content/early/2018/05/15/embj.201798694). It is anticipated that the knowledge gained from the successful candidate's research could ultimately be exploited to devise improved strategies to treat human age-related diseases such Parkinson's.
Job assignments
The successful appointee will join an exciting project characterising the inflammatory pathways that mediates immune system activation during infection and neurodegenerative diseases. The successful appointee will have the opportunity to develop their research career in a laboratory with a strong emphasis on training and mentorship. There will be opportunities to for the successful appointee to supervise postgraduate students and to apply for their own research funding. A broad skills base, including molecular and cellular biology (qRT-PCR), biochemistry (Immunoprecipitation, Western blotting), immunological assays (ELISA, Flow cytometry) is highly desirable.
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
Assessment
Applicants should possess a PhD and a strong track record in innate immunity, inflammation or host-pathogen interactions. Experience with macrophages and dendritic cells is required. Proficiency with molecular biology, biochemistry, flow cytometry and other basic immunological techniques (ELISA) is necessary. Experience with proteomics data is a merit. Applicants should possess a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in immunological research, excellent general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent writing abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and within a team.Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.
