Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
The postdoc project is placed at the Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies at The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå, Sweden. The department offers a creative and stimulating environment and perform internationally recognised basic and applied research, education and environmental monitoring in the research areas: animal ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology and restoration ecology (see https://www.slu.se/en/departments/wildlife-fish-environmental-studies/research/research-areas/ ). The department has a large proportion of international employees and well established national and international cooperation which gives opportunities for fruitful exchange.

Duties:
Are you interested in species conservation, forest ecology and ecological restoration? This Post doc position offer an opportunity to work with these questions through studies of natural forest fires and restoration fires in managed and natural boreal forest landscapes.

A major challenge for species conservation in human-altered forest ecosystems is to maintain naturally occurring species in viable populations. In boreal landscapes that are intensively managed for wood production, conservation of remnant old-growth patches is often not enough. Here there is a need for restoring natural disturbance regimes and accelerate the formation of structures known to be important for biodiversity conservation. A good example of an important disturbance is forest fire. Forest fires have largely determined the post-glacial forest dynamics in the boreal region and are regarded as one of the most important boreal forest disturbances. Many species are therefore adapted to fire and some are dependent on fire for their long term survival. In Scandinavia, efficient fire suppression has resulted in extremely low fire frequencies with negative effect on many species, especially among beetles and wood decay fungi. To make possible the long term survival of these species there is an urgent need for knowledge on how their habitats can be restored in the forest landscape.

Within this project the post doc will evaluate the long term effects of natural and restoration forest fire. The study will be focused around natural fires in northern Sweden and a restoration experiment in northern Finland, initiated in 2006. The fires cover landscapes with different management history. The project aims to 1) Measure long term fire effects comparing natural and prescribed fires on epigaeic arthropods which include taxa important for ecosystem function and biodiversity conservation (including spiders, beetles and ants) and 2) Evaluate the effects of fire severity, landscape characteristics and management history on the distribution, recovery rate and functional diversity of epigaeic arthropods after fire. The hands on working tasks include field and lab work, data analysis and scientific writing.

Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in biology or equivalent. Good knowledge in forest ecology, entomology and statistics as well as field and lab work experience and taxonomic knowledge is meriting. The applicant must be highly motivated and be able to work independently as well as a part of the research group. The candidate must have excellent English skills both in writing and orally. Drivers licence is desirable.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
