We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher to push the limits of time-resolved high-temperature X-ray diffraction for studies of advanced engineering materials. You will work together with researchers and scientists in the Microstructure Physics Division as well as Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory (CMAL), a university-wide research infrastructure, to explore the use of our state-of-the-art X-ray diffraction instrumentation for in situ measurements of phase stability and stress development in thin films and coatings.

Project description
The project is associated with the competence center NEXT - Neutron and X-ray science for industrial technology transitions - comprising 24 partners: Chalmers, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University and a range of research institute, large and small industrial partners and large-scale facilities (synchrotrons and neutron sources). The goal of NEXT is to co-create materials innovations for enabling sustainable transitions in industry through the use of advanced X-ray and neutron-based characterization techniques. While large-scale facilities offer unprecedented possibilities for in situ and/or operando diffraction, access to the facilities is limited and competitive. Your role will be to complement the synchrotron-based activities in NEXT by exploring the boundaries for what can be done with laboratory-based diffractometers. The focus will be on phase transformations in meta-stable transition metal nitride films, but depending on the development of the project residual stress evolution during thermal transients and hold times could be included as well.

Major responsibilities
Your main task will be the development and application of methods and protocols for time-resolved high-temperature diffraction using laboratory X-ray diffraction equipment, and the application of those methods to to resolve scientific questions regarding phase-stability and stress development in coatings. In addition, supervision of PhD and MSc students can be included, as well as training of users of X-ray diffractometers. You will be expected to communicate your results in scientific journals and conferences, as well as in NEXT workshop with industrial and academic partners.

Qualifications
PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or similar, no more than 3 years old. Previous experience of laboratory X-ray diffraction is mandatory. Experience of in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction measurements is a merit.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
