The fully funded 2-year Postdoc project "Modelling of thermomechanical behaviour of AM-built microstructures of superalloys based on data from large-scale neutron and synchrotron infrastructures" combines material modelling, computational mechanics and parameter identification. Join us in exploring this exciting field of research with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with experimentalists at large-scale neutron and synchrotron infrastructures in a supportive and friendly working environment.

Information about the project and division
The postdoc position is placed at the Division of Material and Computational Mechanics at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with researchers from the Division of Microstructure Physics and the Division of Engineering Materials at Linköping University. We foster an inclusive, friendly, and supportive working environment to which you are welcome to contribute.

Your project will be part of the activities in the Vinnova Sustainable Industry competence centre, NEutron and X-ray science for industrial Technology transitions (NEXT)

With the introduction of novel materials and advanced manufacturing methods for superalloys, such as innovative casting techniques and additive manufacturing, new opportunities have arisen to tailor the grain structure of components. However, assessing thermomechanical behaviour and damage evolution in new, graded or otherwise complex microstructures remains a challenging task. Parallel projects within NEXT will utilise and further develop large-scale neutron and synchrotron infrastructure tools for ex-situ and in-situ experiments to acquire essential information regarding the microstructure and the physical mechanisms involved during thermomechanical loading. This postdoctoral project will build upon the experimental findings to develop physically based models for predicting and enhancing the understanding of the thermomechanical behaviour of these materials and the influence of microstructure. The modelling will encompass methods for representing microstructures in simulations, crystal plasticity, homogenisation techniques, FEM, and parameter identification based on experimental data.

Main responsibilities

• Pursue your own research related to the project.
• Develop and implement material models, finite element codes, and calibration procedures.
• Disseminate research through both journal publications, and via presentations at international conferences and for industrial partners (in NEXT).
• The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent.

Qualifications

• PhD in material mechanics, computational mechanics, or similar (you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*)
• Knowledge and experience in constitutive modelling and FEM.
• Knowledge in programming.
• Good communicative skills in English (oral and written).
• A Swedish security clearance may be required.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
