The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) is part of the Faculty of Forest Science, has about 50 employees and is based in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department conducts high-quality research and education at a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The main focus in Umeå is on value chains in the bio-based industry where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / refined, used and reused cost-effectively for various purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, focus is on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro level and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.

Background:
Production of high-quality forest products in pulp and paper industries and future biorefineries generates internal residual streams and the utilization of these streams is important from a sustainability perspective, but also from economic aspects. The residual streams in the form of sludge consist largely of inorganic nutrients such as P together with other macro and micronutrients. Thermochemical conversion of sludge has been shown as a suitable technique for both energy recovery and to produce nutritious ash for use in fertilization of forestlands. The plant availability of recycled nutrients is determined to some extent by chemical form but also by physical parameters such as porosity, including volume and size distribution of pores, which in turn affects the water-holding capacity influencing leaching rates. X-ray-based microtomography is a three-dimensional (3D) imaging method that, together with advanced image analysis and conventional SEM microscopy, provides tools to characterize and quantify the porosity and aggregation of ash elements of thermally treated residual materials in order to estimate the suitability of ash used for nutrient recycling. Developing and optimizing analytical methods for different applications is an important component of the work that the applicant is expected to perform.

Tasks:
In this project, methods for characterizing ashes from thermochemical conversion of residual material from bio-based processes are developed and applied. The goal is to generate basic data and new knowledge about porosity and internal microstructure for ash particles from the combustion of ash and phosphorus-rich residual streams such as biomass from the pulp industry. The applicant is expected to take primary responsibility for the practical implementation of the project, data collection and modeling of results, as well as for scientific publication.

The project is implemented within the research environments Bio4Energy (www.bio4energy.se) and Treesearch (www.treesearch.se). The employment is located in Umeå at the Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology and the experimental work is carried out in collaboration with primarily TEC-Lab at Umeå University. A major part of the analytical work will expectantly be conducted at synchrotron facilities enabling advanced spectroscopic methods provided successful beamtime applications.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is interested in a continued academic career in biomass technology. Applicants must have a PhD, eg in the subject areas of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, material chemistry, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates who have graduated a maximum of four years before the end of the application period. Educational background and / or experience in thermochemical transformation and synchrotron-based microtomography is desirable. The applicant must have a proven ability to independently initiate, conduct and complete research projects and create and publish the results in international scientific journals. Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to participate in teaching at the undergraduate level within the forestry program, why good skills in Swedish are desired.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
