Increased computer capacity and the development of numerical codes have enabled us to study advanced industrial and natural flow processes as well as generic flow phenomena with Computational Fluid Dynamics. The trust in such simulations is growing as well as the need to do validating experiments. At the same time laser techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry and Laser Doppler Anemometry are becoming more and more advanced and are therefore possible to apply on a variety of areas of application. Besides this, the laser techniques are becoming more easy to use and may therefore be alternatives to Computational Fluid Dynamics also for more regular studies.
Project description: In this PhD project the possibilities and limitations of laser techniques to study advanced industrial and natural flow processes will be scrutinized. The methodology will be to apply suitable techniques on a selection of problems with an increased level of complexity either regarding the flow or the technique applied. Means to secure quality and trust in the measurements will be formed and possibilities to apply laser techniques in a regular manner instead of Computational Fluid Dynamics, for instance, will be evaluated. The work will be carried out in a stimulated environment with world-class equipment and in co-operation with other PhD-students and researchers. The position is suited for an innovative student that has power of initiative and can be a good team-member.
Qualifications: Applicants should have 240 credits of which 60 credits on an advanced level within Civil Engineering, Mechanical engineering or Applied physics or equivalent. Applicants should also be good (but not necessary fluent) in written and spoken Swedish and English. Previous experience of Particle Image Velocimetry and/or Laser Doppler Anemometry is a merit. Communication skills, power of initiative and an innovative mind are important as well as engineering and theoretical skills. Since male students are traditionally more numerous in this field of studies, female candidates will be given preference on principle, as long as the qualifications are equivalent.
The Division of Fluid Mechanics is a part of the Department of Engineering sciences and Mathematics at Luleå University of Technology.
