Then, we invite you to apply for a PhD position in theoretical nano-physics at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg Sweden.
As a prospective PhD student you will be involved in research on nano-electronic quantum devices coupled to light-fields that can act as sensitive detectors or that can be exploited for on-chip tasks such as cooling or creation of nonclassical light fields. While tackling these theoretical challenges, you will be able to interact closely with experimental colleagues.
Information about the division and the department
The position will be placed in the theory division of the department for Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers, where diverse research from quantum transport, quantum information, and quantum materials to quantum thermodynamics is carried out. More specifically, the hired PhD student will be part of the group of Janine Splettstoesser, working on "dynamics and thermodynamics of nanoscale devices" and will join the ERC-funded project "NanoRecycle", dealing with energy conversion processes in quantum and nanoscale devices, and/or the FlagEra project ThinQ, dealing with single-photon detection in cavity coupled quantum dots.
The specific research project of this position is concerned with the unique dynamical and thermodynamical properties of nanoelectronic devices coupled to light. Nanoelectronic devices such as quantum dots can be used as sensitive detectors of light fields via photon-assisted tunneling of electrons - possibly down to the single-photon level. At the same time, the electronic device can use the light-field as a thermodynamic resource for producing electrical power or for on-chip cooling, or conversely, it can use electronic resources to create light. The PhD project will deal with theoretical research on these types of challenges.
Major responsibilities
For this PhD position, we seek a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with a strong interest in the theoretical analysis of nanoscale and quantum devices. As a prospect PhD student, you are expected to carry out your research project in close collaboration with other team members and in dialogue with local and international experimental colleagues. With growing independence, we expect you to show initiative by proactively developing and contributing with your own research ideas within the advertised project. The major responsibility is to carry out the research project, in addition you will have some teaching responsibilities. You will work in a collaborative environment, where team work is essential for project success.

Qualifications
You should have obtained a Master degree in Theoretical Physics or similar by the time of the start of the PhD position and you should have acquired excellent technical skills, with preference in quantum transport theory and/or quantum thermodynamics and/or quantum optics. You should have a strong driving force to pursue excellent theoretical research in a collaborative environment. The position requires very good verbal and written communication skills in English.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
