General information
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals. The department is widely recognised for excellent research and education, and strongly international with approximately 300 employees from more than 40 countries. Our department is located in Sweden's second largest city Gothenburg - the world's most sustainable destination every year since 2016 according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index. The department is organised in four divisions where research spans from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. The position is placed in the Logic and types unit of the Division of computing science, with Chalmers University of Technology as employer.
Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, you will acquire the skills and knowledge to conduct independent research, culminating in writing a scientific dissertation contributing to the development of knowledge in the subject area. More specifically, you will read, review, and write research papers; give presentations; take courses that complement your background; conduct research within the topic of the project under the guidance of the supervision team of experienced researchers. The proposed work includes many opportunities for collaboration and interaction at the department, and other universities.
This position is a great opportunity for you as a PhD student to develop your scientific and technical skills as part of a team of leading researchers in the area of algorithmic graph theory. The project in particular concerns graph modification problems. The goal is to investigate the tractability of these problems from both the classical and parameterized complexity perspectives. This work lies at the intersection of structural graph theory, computational complexity and algorithm design.

Qualifications
By the starting date, you have a degree at Master's level or equivalent in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits. Knowledge in graph theory, classical/parameterized complexity and algorithms is meritorious, as well as a documented track record of research in the area of the project.
The working language at the department is English and the position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
You will be enrolled in our PhD program, comprising over 140 PhD students in the department. PhD student positions are limited to five years. Besides devoting 80% of your working time to performing research, the remaining 20% of your working time is devoted to departmental duties, such as helping as a teaching assistant in courses offered by the university. Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers' general agreement for PhD student positions.
