PhD student position in Control and Stability of Power System with High Penetration of Renewables

We are looking for a competent and highly motivated doctoral student to join the Division of Electric Power Engineering, in close collaboration with the Division of Energy Technology, to contribute to research and education in the field of sustainable electric power and energy systems. We offer an open-minded, collaborative, and supportive research environment that encourages individual growth and development.

Project overview

The ongoing transition from synchronous machine-based generation to converter-dominated renewable energy sources presents new challenges for the operation, control, and stability of the electric power grid. Existing infrastructure, originally designed for traditional generation technologies, must now be re-evaluated and adapted to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving system.

This project focuses on modeling large-scale power systems with a high share of renewable generation. It will address key questions related to frequency and voltage stability under changing generation technologies, geographical shifts in production, and increasing electrification of the industrial and transport sectors. In addition, the project will evaluate potential countermeasures and strategies to ensure reliable and stable grid operation in the future.

The PhD project spans 4+x years (typically with departmental duties accounting for 0.5 to 1 year).

Research environment

This project is co-supervised by:

• Division of Electric Power Engineering, which conducts research across a wide range of electric power technologies. The research group Operation and Control of Active Grids focuses on control, operation, and stability of power systems during the transition to converter-dominated generation and ongoing electrification. The work combines strong theoretical foundations with experimental validation in labs and real-world environments.
• Division of Energy Technology, known for its longstanding expertise in energy systems analysis and methodological development. The division hosts a collaborative team of senior researchers, postdocs, and PhD students working toward a sustainable energy future through comprehensive systems modeling and scenario evaluation.

Main responsibilities

• Conduct high-quality research within the scope of the project.
• Complete PhD-level coursework as part of the doctoral education.
• Contribute to departmental duties, such as teaching and student supervision, up to a maximum of 20%.

Your profile

We are looking for applicants who have:

• A Master's degree (equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits) in Electric Power Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team and contribute to the development of future sustainable power systems.

What we offer
