Your work assignments
The position as a PhD student is situated within the LUNETs programme, in collaboration with Mistra Geopolitics. In dialog with LUNETs' research leaders, the PhD student will have large degrees of freedom to develop an interdisciplinary, but primarily social scientific and/or humanities-oriented, PhD project with a focus on negative emissions technologies (NETs) or other methods to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (CDR). These technologies and methods include for example bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS), reforestation and afforestation, biochar, ocean fertilization, and enhanced weathering. Possible focuses of the PhD project include, but are not limited to, investigations of how conceptions, framings or implementation of these technologies or methods influence or are influenced by access to natural resources, principles of justice, power structures, international relations, regulatory frameworks, politics, economics, development of technology or future scenarios.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to PhD studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
Your workplace
You will work at the Division of Environmental Change. It conducts high-quality research and teaching on the interaction between environmental and social development in an analytically innovative way. The department conducts postgraduate education and basic education with an environmental science focus.
The Division of Environmental Change also hosts the international and interdisciplinary research programme LUNETs, which conducts both critical and development-oriented studies of negative carbon dioxide emissions. Negative emissions have become increasingly important, or even a necessity, for reaching ambitious temperature targets and are also included in many national climate strategies.
Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master's level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.
To be admitted to graduate studies, the applicant needs to have an advanced degree, have completed a minimum of 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS are on the advanced level. Furthermore, to be admitted to graduate studies in environmental science, the requirement is that at least 90 of the credits are in a subject matter related to that area.
Relevant educational background can be political science, sociology, geography, human ecology, history, economics, global studies, interdisciplinary studies in environmental science, or similar.
We are searching for a motivated and independent person with good organizational skills. The person must also have a high level of ability to work together in a team as well as work independently.
The position requires the following documented skills:
• Experience of methods in social science or humanities.
The following documented skills are an advantage:
• Experience in social science or humanities research of the environment, climate or ecological sustainability.
• Experience in social science or humanities research of climate politics, global or regional resources, or geopolitics.
The review of the applicants is based on independent student papers or theses, work certificates, certificates and grades and interviews. The applicants are also strongly encouraged to attach a preliminary PhD thesis proposal within the scope of the call (max. three pages). This attachment is included in the evaluation of the applicant.
Terms of employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at.
The employment has a duration of four years' full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
