Anställningsform: Tidsbegränsad anställning, 4 år
Omfattning: 100 %
Placering: Fysiska institutionen (LTH), Lund
Tillträde: During 2014
Diarienummer: LTHPA 2013/1264
The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused on different aspects of semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science via quantum physics to different applications. The division is at the center of the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University - the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University (nmC@LU). Lund Nano Lab is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the "Engineering Nanoscience" program.
During 2014 - 2018, the Nanometer Structure Consortium will host the EU project "Nanoscale Materials for Energy: Fundamentals, Safety and Applications (PhD4Energy)", a FP7 Marie Curie Innovative Doctoral Program that will train in total 12 early-stage researchers (PhD students). The scientific focus is the material science, growth and application of semiconductor nanowires for photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes and thermoelectrics, safety investigations of nanoparticles, and energy conversion at the molecular scale. The project requires advanced materials science, nanocharacterization, interdisciplinary methods, and close collaboration between theory and experiment. All PhD students within PhD4Energy will perform an internship at a Swedish or international company or at a major research facility as part of their training.
For more information see:
www.nano.lth.se .
Publiceringsdatum2014-07-03Dina arbetsuppgifterThe PhD student will participate in a nanobiophysics project with the aim to realize artificial molecular motors based on biomolecules such as proteins and DNA. The specific aims for this project will be to realize nanofluidic devices to enable the observation of molecular motors, and to observe and study motor operation using single-molecule microscopy experiments. The actual synthesis of motors will be primarily performed by collaborators, even though some participation in this part of the project is possible. The project will be in close collaboration with biochemists, theorists, and molecular biologists within nmC and in international collaborations.
The PhD studies contain a course part and a scientific project. The PhD student will be expected to carry out several months of internship in a company or major research facility. Active participation in outreach activities and teaching at the undergraduate level might also be a part of the job.
Behörighet
A formal requirement for doctoral studies in physics is an advanced university degree within a related field, such as a Master's degree in physics or nanotechnology or equivalent, or substantial advanced course work at the master level or comparable, including an independent research project. Furthermore, the acceptance is based on the estimated ability to accomplish your postgraduate studies. Good knowledge in spoken and written English is a requirement.
In addition, the student must fulfill the following two eligibility criteria:
1. Be, at the time of recruitment, in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in Sweden, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
2. At the time of employment start, must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Sweden for more than 12 months during the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.
Bedömningsgrund
Selection to postgraduate studies is based on the expected ability to perform well in the studies. The evaluation of the ability to perform well is based primarily on the results of studies at the basic and advanced levels, in particular:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as a broad and thorough preparation in physics, biophysics and/or nanoscience. This can be documented by appended documents.
2. Estimated ability to work independently and the ability to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on undergraduate research experiences, a masters thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a possible interview.
3. Skills in written and oral communication.
4. Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.
Desirable Qualifications: We expect that your undergraduate studies include courses in physics, including biophysics and optics. The research is to a large extent interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experience from other relevant areas of physics, biochemistry, and micro/nanoscience is of high value. Experimental skills are essential, specifically experience in fluorescence microscopy, single-molecule techniques, wetlab techniques related to molecular biology or biochemistry, micro-/nanofluidics, and clean-room work. Skills in numerical modeling and semiconductor physics are also of advantage.
Important personal qualities are, beside creativity and a curious mind, the ability to work both independently and in a group and experience in the scientific interaction with researchers from other disciplines and in other countries. Good knowledge in spoken and written English, and good oral and written communication skills are very important.
