Department of Crop Production Ecology
The Department of Crop Production Ecology, together with the Department of Ecology, forms an inspiring research environment in SLU's Ecology Center in Uppsala. We educate and carry out research on plants for food, feed and energy, as well as the interactions with the surrounding environment and systems. The research examines how different production methods, cultivation environments and systems affect yield and other ecosystem services, as well as product quality and the surrounding environment. We teach about plant production, plant ecology and eco-physiology, weed biology and cropping systems in an ecological sustainability context.

Old heritage cultivars in modern sustainable cropping systems

Description:
Do you want to be part of an interdisciplinary research project that ranges from the cropping system to the quality of the grain produced and consumer preferences? Are you interested in how heritage cereal cultivars can contribute to sustainable farming systems? Then this PhD position could be what you are looking for. The breeding of new cultivars of cereals has aimed at increasing the production potential of cultivars with a good supply of inputs and with less consideration of nutritional quality and the ability of the cultivars to adapt to the local conditions or to cope with extreme weather. The old heritage cultivars are often described as both healthier and tastier than modern cultivars, and the production as more resistant to, for example, drought and pests, but the knowledge of how the environment and management affect these aspects needs to be developed.

The aim of the PhD project is to find links between environmental factors and management measures on sustainability aspects and quality in the production of heritage cereal cultivars, and to investigate how these cultivars differ from modern cultivars with respect to environment and management.

Qualifications:
The successful applicant must have a background in biology or agronomy and an interest in developing agricultural and cropping systems for sustainable production.
