Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
Now you have the opportunity to be part of PRECISE, which is one of three future areas at Luleå University of Technology. PRECISE is a strategic initiative for pioneering research in innovative precision health to enable an attractive and sustainable society that promotes equal and good health throughout the lifespan. The research within PRECISE is interdisciplinary, where a number of different research subjects and societal actors collaborate in various projects to increase the accuracy of interventions at the molecular, individual and societal level. Through increased knowledge of human biology, lifestyle and environment, new methods are developed that enable the right intervention at the right time and in the right context.

Here you can read more about PRECISE https://www.ltu.se/research/Framtidsomraden/PRECISE

As a doctoral student, you will be part of a research school focusing on precision health and in a network with other doctoral students within PRECISE, with different research orientations and subject affiliations.

For the research topic Applied Geochemistry we are looking for a PhD student for the project Early detection of risk for diseases using environmental forensics - ED2EF.

Subject description
Applied Geochemistry comprises studies into the occurrence and mobility of the chemical elements in the environment, with a particular focus on methods to prevent or reduce the environmental impact of mining.

Project description
This project aims to increase the knowledge of how we are affected by our environment. Therefore, we need to study how naturally and anthropogenically released elements are correlated to the regional distribution of diseases and if any elements constitute a risk. An environmental forensic approach will move medical geology forward using a multi-element and multi-isotope approach to pinpoint sources, transport pathways and different ways of exposure to target elements. The major aim of this project is to detect the risk of diseases in the early stage by data monitoring people's health and water-rock interaction. This project combines the scientific fields of environmental forensics and medical geology. This project (ED2EF) will focus on understanding the occurrence, mobility and fate of critical elements and metals associated with critical raw material (CRM) mining, such as rare earth elements (REE) and U. To understand the link between elevated element distribution and the risk for diseases, the student will assess and visualise selected CRM concentrations in water, soils, rocks, and plants and disease distribution in northern Sweden by using geographic information system (GIS) software. Further, the aim is to identify regional and temporal variations of CRM concentrations in water, soils, rocks, and plants and to study the main exposure pathways for humans using environmental forensic fingerprinting techniques.

Work tasks
A doctoral position involves both theoretical and practical scientific work in accordance with an individual study plan. The doctoral position is part of a research group where scientific work is carried out in collaboration. For the doctoral student, this includes collecting and analysing data and writing scientific articles under supervision. It also means conducting third-cycle courses, participating in the graduate school and the department's seminar activities. Furthermore, to present the research nationally and internationally. The doctoral student position may also include departmental duties.

Expertise and experience
You are qualified to apply for this position if you have an MSc or a foreign degree equivalent to an MSc in geoscience, geochemistry, or a similar focus area.

Experience in geographic information system software is a merit for the position.

The applicant must have good cooperation and oral and written communication skills in English.
