This is a call for a PhD position in the Data Science and AI division at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Chalmers University of Technology. The department of Computer Science and Engineering is strongly international, with approximately 300 employees from over 50 countries. The department is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals.

About us
Our division, Data Science and AI (DSAI) at CSE conducts research in cooperation with partners in academia, industry, public, and cultural sectors; and has many research synergies coming together on the main thread of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The successful candidate will join the newly established research group AI in Computational Arts, Music, and Games within the DSAI division.

About the research project
This position is related to investigating learned cultural representations in data search spaces of generative AI models for culture and creative domains. These domains may include sound, music, visual art, 3D graphics, movement, or multimodal combinations thereof. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach: the search spaces of AI models will be analyzed in their facts using quantitative methods from data science and AI, results of which then be investigated using qualitative methods and theory of critical studies. This interdisciplinary project bridges data science and AI, computational arts and music, social sciences and humanities.

The doctoral student will be joining the WASP-HS Cluster AI Futures of Culture and Memory. This research cluster is a collaboration of Uppsala University, Chalmers University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linnaeus University, and Umeå University. The cluster is dedicated to exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming human culture and collective memory.

The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program - Humanity and Society (WASP-HS) is a national research program in Sweden. The vision of WASP-HS is to foster novel interdisciplinary knowledge in the humanities and social sciences about AI and autonomous systems and their impact on human and social development. WASP-HS enables cutting edge research, expertise, and competence building in the humanities and social sciences.

The PhD student will join the WASP-HS graduate school which provides foundations, perspectives, and state-of-the-art knowledge in the different disciplines taught by leading researchers in the field. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, researchers and practitioners in the field. It thus provides added value on top of the existing PhD programs at the partner universities, providing unique opportunities for students who are dedicated to achieving international research excellence with societal relevance.
