In Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology leads the 1.5-billion-SEK, 12-year Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), aiming to build a superconducting quantum computer. As part of this project, you will explore quantum computation with microwave circuits, collaborate with experimentalists, and contribute to globally significant research.
About the project
Circuit quantum electrodynamics offers promising avenues for building quantum computers using superconducting circuits. This project focuses on modeling the quantum dynamics of these circuits at the Hamiltonian level and optimizing their control. You will develop theoretical models and optimization techniques to advance quantum information processing, collaborating closely with experimental teams. The work involves both analytical and numerical methods, offering a rich interdisciplinary experience.
About the Division and Department
The position is based in the Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQPL) at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) at Chalmers. AQPL collaborates extensively with experimental groups such as the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. MC2 hosts Northern Europe's largest cleanroom facility, alongside state-of-the-art cryogenic and microwave electronic equipment for large-scale quantum processor development. AQPL also contributes to WACQT, which aims to position Swedish academia and industry at the forefront of quantum technology through a collaborative environment involving multiple universities, industrial partners, and experimental efforts. The candidate will have opportunities to participate in graduate school activities and access common courses and shared resources.
Major Responsibilities
Your primary responsibility will be to pursue doctoral studies, which includes:
• Conducting research independently and collaboratively within the project.
• Publishing results in scientific journals and presenting findings at international conferences.
• Completing coursework related to the field and core transferable skills.
• Optionally contributing to undergraduate teaching or performing other duties, up to 20% of your working hours.

• M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits.
• Proficiency in conducting literature reviews.
• Expertise in a scientific programming language (e.g., Python or Julia).
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
• A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for teamwork.
Desired:
• Experience in modeling quantum properties of superconducting circuits, both analytically and numerically.
• Familiarity with open quantum systems.
• Background in optimal control methods.
• Experience with machine learning for optimization or modeling.
• Prior work in quantum computing or quantum information.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
