We offer a PhD position to visualise simulation results by combining virtual and physical models. This provides a unique opportunity to work creatively between the fields of building performance simulation, sustainability assessment and data visualization. You will be supported by leading researchers at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and industry partners from the Digital Twin City Centre.

About us
The Research Area Sustainable Built Environment is part of the Division of Building Technology at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. We develop concepts, tools and strategies to enhance the sustainability performance of buildings and cities. We are a team of about 25 international researchers including many PhD students. We strive to create an open and inclusive work environment. We have a strong profile in sustainability assessment and in developing digital methods and tools to support design and decision-making. See https://sb.chalmers.se/ for more information about the research area. The project is part of the Digital Twin Cities Centre (https://dtcc.chalmers.se/) with a large support network of partners.

About the research project
This project focuses on visualising simulation results by combining virtual and physical models called mixed realities (MR). Multiple use cases are covered, such as combining wind, air pollution, noise and energy simulation results for neighbourhood densification, travel behaviour due to changing demographics in a region, or daylight and embodied carbon on a building level. The technology relies on augmented reality (AR) using handheld devices or goggles by itself or in combination with touch tables, physical 3D models or 2D maps of the area in planning. Finally, this should support stakeholders in making decisions towards a sustainable built environment.

Job and responsibilities:

• Develop MR workflows
• Conduct interviews studies
• Carry out user studies
• Publish the research results
• Support in teaching and departmental work

What you will do

• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Civil and Environmental Engineering
• Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Qualifications:
We seek candidates possessing a master's degree in engineering, architecture, urban planning, data science, or a related field. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of independence and possess excellent communication skills in English. Additionally, experience with research projects, academic writing, and programming is highly advantageous.
