hela Sverige Division Design & Human Factors is one of three divisions within the Department of Product and Production Development (www.chalmers.se/ppd). The research at the division concerns the relation between people and artefacts in a broad sense. The overall purpose is to develop knowledge that is relevant for, and can be used in, the creation of artefacts taking into account e.g. efficiency and safety as well as affective aspects. The division now seeks one (or two) Ph.D. students to be part of the establishment of the research group on, and the development of the research area, Formal Aesthetics.
Job description
The specific research project will focus on the significance of Good Form and intends to develop a typological method for optimising the creation, perception and understanding of form. Questions to be addressed are e.g. Is it possible to make the design process more systematic and predictable, as well as computer compatible? And How are reason, logic and intellect colluding with intuition and pleasure? The aim is to generate a language of form for strengthening the capability to observe forms analytically and applying this knowledge in a creative and prospective way. The purpose is to enhance an understanding of the structure and function of the visual form, facilitate the assessment and evaluation of form, and enable the generation and optimisation of new innovative results.
You will be employed as a doctoral student and receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your working time will be devoted to duties at the division, mainly teaching undergraduate courses. The remaining time will be dedicated to your own research education, where the aim is to complete your PhD exam within five years (without department duties in four years). An intermediate goal is to obtain the degree of Licentiate after approx. two years.
As a doctoral student at Division Design & Human Factors you will not only become a member of a multidisciplinary team but also of an international research community. Doctoral studies at Chalmers are organized in research schools. In this case, you will therefore also become part of the research school Human – Technology – Design.
Qualifications
A successful applicant should have an MSc or an MFA in Industrial Design Engineering or Industrial Design (or corresponding). Professional experience is appreciated. An artistic talent and excellent computer skills are required. The applicant should be self-driven, open-minded and interested in pursuing innovative results for the creative design process. Verbal and visual presentation skills, writing, and fluent English are necessary.
