Background
Milling in hot work tool steels pre-hardened to 44-50 HRC is characterised by poor machinability. The process windows of possible cutting data are narrow and sometimes non-existing. Furthermore the requirement of rigid machine set-ups is very pronounced. Frequent in these occasions is premature micro-chipping of the cutting edge, followed by macro-chipping leading to tool fracture. Some important aspects of chipping tool wear are: 1) Chip control at the entrance and the exit of the cut, 2) Cutting data and process, tool corner radius, depth of cut, feed, etc. 3) Design of the cutting tool, ER, (compressive) residual stress state depth profile, edge toughness, etc. 4) Work piece composition, work hardening, alloying or residual elements that form deposits in the tool-chip interface, among others.
Goals
The master thesis will include both theoretical and practical analysis of chipping tool wear and introduce a fracture mechanics approach on chipping tool wear. In order to understand the chipping behaviour during milling, the master thesis will contain a literature study on milling tool steels, chipping tool wear during milling and fracture mechanics on chipping tool wear using low and high cycles fatigue theories. The analysis will focus on differentiating and evaluating what are the precursors of chipping tool wear, also to be able to replicate those conditions in a systematic way. The analysis will also consist on reviewing tool-workpiece interactions like chip flow and chip morphology with the included tool steels and used cutting tools. Using tools like high speed imaging is foreseen as a primary means of investigation, cutting forces measurements and microscopy studies as complementary means to understand the observations from HSI and chip formation.
Your profile
We are looking for you who are taking the last year of master of science in engineering with orientation to mechanical engineering, materials science or equivalent. If you have good initiative, are used to think analytically and communicate well in both Swedish and English, then you are the right candidate. Knowledge in cutting technology and steels is an advantage.
The master thesis is done at Swerim in Kista. Send your application by filling the form below and choose next.
