By offering trucks, buses, construction equipment, power solutions for marine and industrial applications, financing and services that increase our customers' uptime and productivity.

Our headquarters are in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo Group shares are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm."

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Who are we? What do we work with?
We belong to a department that works to optimize the product platform towards specific customer needs. In our team, we develop, secure and verify complete vehicle performance by vehicle simulations. We also provide data analytics on customer usage, vehicle performance and operating conditions.

Background
Drive cycles are needed as input to different types of simulations to study vehicle performance.
Those typically require many input parameters such as road profile, curvature, speed profile, weather, driver behavior etc.
The drive cycles used today are based on real life data such as measurements, logged data, databases, making it costly to have a large library of driving cycles covering any vehicle usage or environment.
To gain access to a wider range of drive cycles, a statistical model is needed to generate virtual drive cycles.

Objective
This thesis is an extension of the work "Hidden Markov models for detecting steering events and evaluating fatigue damage" by Maghsood (2016).
The thesis work will include:
Use logged data and road information databases to define road characteristics and create training sets
Develop an algorithm (e.g. using Markov's chains) for generating virtual road altitude profiles
Verify the severity of generated drive cycles to existing ones for standard types of performance evaluations (energy consumption, brake performance, durability, tire wear)
Depending on progress, the scope can be extended to other parameters (road curvature, speed profile, driver behavior) and combine those to a comprehensive drive cycle generation algorithm.

Who are you?
We are looking for two master program students in engineering with specialization in engineering mathematics, Applied Mechanics, Physics or equivalent. The work will be conducted at Volvo GTT in Gothenburg. The thesis work is 30 higher education credits (ECTS).
The work will be written in English and the main tools used for the thesis will Matlab or Python.

Do you find it exciting, think this is a perfect match to your future ambitions?
Please, send in your application through our webiste, including CV, Transcript (grades) and cover letter.
