Our team
We are a multi-national team of database reliability engineers based in Stockholm.
We are responsible for one of the most important databases in Klarna. We make sure it's up and running. Classical DBA work.
On the other side, we provide our knowledge to the organisation to help Klarna achieve its ambitious goals. We support migrations of databases to AWS, we help optimising queries and solve general database-related problems.
What you will do
"In other words, an effective DBRE functions by empowering others and guiding them, not functioning as a gatekeeper."
"Database Reliability Engineering" by Laine Campbell and Charity Majors, published by O'Reilly 2017
You will do classical database administration. You will be responsible for PostgreSQL servers hosted on AWS EC2 instances, access management, replication, backup & recovery, the monitoring and in general the availability of these databases.
You will also be responsible for the underlying AWS infrastructure and the handling of security vulnerabilities. And you will support the many Klarna teams using the database to help them optimize their queries.
But you will do more than the classical DBA work.
Klarna's development and product teams run hundreds of RDS instances on AWS. Many hours have been and will be spent on the setup and maintenance of these databases.
You will support the teams so they can focus on developing new features instead of taking care of their databases. These databases have different requirements with respect to availability & performance. You will support the teams to meet these requirements.
So how will you do all that?
In general, you will try to automate all processes to set up, monitor and maintain databases on AWS.
You will support the teams to select the right database technology for their specific use cases.
You will help them to design their database schemas and queries before the launch of their application.
You will implement tools (in Ansible and CloudFormation) the teams can then use to set up their databases in no time, including the right security groups, tags, snapshots and backups, etc.
You will implement tools teams can use to quickly set up the monitoring of the availability of their databases.
You will implement dashboard templates that display the most common database metrics and make those templates available for the teams so they can start using them right after the setup of their databases.
You will provide tools to help them identify issues with their queries (AWS CloudWatch, Lambda functions, RDS logs, DataDog, Splunk dashboards, whatever is available).
You will help them to solve these issues and to optimize their schemas and queries after the application launch.
You should have
Professional experience with PostgreSQL database administration (optimisation, tuning, configuration, monitoring)
Professional experience with AWS in general and AWS database technologies (i.e. RDS, Aurora) in particular
Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand complex systems
Good knowledge of SQL query performance optimisation
The will to automate everything automatable
A healthy appetite to learn new things
You might also have
University degree in Computer Science, or similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience
Good knowledge of Ansible, Python is a plus
Good knowledge of database scaling techniques for high-performance databases
Good knowledge of the Linux operating system
Good knowledge of other databases like MySQL or MSSQL
