The position is within the group Collision Avoidance. Several functions developed by the group are in production and was launched as 'World First' such as City Safety and Full Auto-brake with pedestrian detection. There is a high set goal to continue this world leadership. Current Volvo products offer collision avoidance technologies, as above, that supports drivers in avoiding rear-end and pedestrian accidents. This support consists of warning and autonomous emergency braking, but in the future autonomous steering interventions will be used as well. We work team based, in close co-operation with our verification department.
As an Industrial PhD candidate you will conduct research within the field of "Active traffic safety and driver support" with the goal to reach a PhD degree after approximately four and a half years. The work location will be split between the Chalmers University in Gothenburg and Volvo Car Group in Gothenburg. In addition to carrying out research, you will also take courses and assist in teaching at Chalmers. More specifically, the overall aim of the project is to find new, effective, and robust methods for autonomous collision avoidance by steering interventions. Theoretical work, for example related to methods for dead-reckoning, path predictions and path control will be mixed with more practical tasks such as validation of results using vehicle prototypes. PhD studies involve independent work to achieve results of scientific value. At the same time, you will have possibilities to interact with developers and researchers, both at Chalmers and at Volvo Car Group, skilled in the relevant research area.
Main responsibilities
• Conduct research within the field of "Active traffic safety and driver support" eg. find new, effective, and robust methods for autonomous collision avoidance by steering interventions
• Take courses and assist in teaching at Chalmers University
Required qualifications
• M.Sc. Electrical Engineering, Technical Physics, Computer Science or equivalent with emphasis on signal processing and control theory
• Working proficiency in English
• Driver's license (B-level)
• A master thesis or previous work within relevant research areas, e.g. active traffic safety, signal and parameter estimation, automatic control, etc. is meritorious
Personal qualities
• Being able to, and fond of, working independently for significant time periods
• Easy to communicate and to take part in team work
• Very ambitious and a high analytical talent
