hela Sverige The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.
Come and build the future of Science with us!
About the role:
We are seeking to appoint a Technician to join our Neutron Chopper Systems group. A neutron chopper is a specialised electromechanical device that can shape a particle beam using disks that rotate at very high speeds (20,000 rpm). As a Technician for Neutron Chopper Systems at ESS, you will play a key role in supporting the design, development, and maintenance of complex control, electrical and mechanical systems integral to the operation of the facility. You will provide expert technical advice to electrical, mechatronics, control and mechanical engineers, offering insights on production methods, best practices, and process improvements as needed.
Your main areas of responsibilities as a Technician for Neutron Chopper Systems will include:
• Maintenance, assembly, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and testing of electrical, electronic and mechanical high speed rotating systems (motors, PLC, controllers, servo drives, cabinets, sensors, cabling).
• Cabinet/rack integration, including layout, mounting of components, wiring of signal and power cabling, and final system verification.
• Routing and terminating electrical and data cabling (including shielding, crimping and connecting and measuring) in accordance with ESS standards.
• Assisting in vibration and balancing tests of rotating components to ensure safe and reliable operation at high speeds.
• To offer expert technical advice to electrical, mechatronics and control engineers in relation to productions methods, best practice and as required.
• Handling workshop equipment, tools, including small soldering. Small and large component assembly and handling (including components >100kg).
• Execution of the R&D, testing programs and quality control process, as required.
• Procurement of electrical electronic and control parts and keeping stock control and inventory.
• Maintaining the chopper facilities ready for use and ensuring the safety of these working spaces.
• Other workshop related tasks, including administrative aspects and documentation.
Some limited travelling and working abroad may be required. This is a permanent position with a six-month probationary period and is based at the ESS campus in Lund, Sweden.

• A certified professional education in the field of Mechanical, Electromechanics or Mechatronic Technology (electrical, mechatronics technician, Industrial technician or similar certified professions) would be an advantage.
• 5 or more years of experience in an engineering or other highly technical environment is a prerequisite.
• Proven mechanical dexterity, able to manipulate precision jobs and to assemble complex parts.
• Certified training for work on Low Voltage Systems (<400V) and/or experience of electrical assembly of cabinets and/or troubleshooting PLCs and motion control systems would be considered a strong advantage.
• The ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and mechanical drawings Certified training for work on Low Voltage Systems (<400V) and/or experience of troubleshooting PLCs and motion control systems would be considered a strong advantage.
• Practical experience with workshop electrical measuring equipment, isolation, resistance, impedance, etc.
• Very good oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of Swedish would be an advantage.
Wide-ranging experience of mechanical or electronic processes and practices is desirable. Hands-on experience with rack integration, signal and power cabling, cable termination, and grounding practices as well as familiarity with servo and stepper motors, drives, and encoder/resolver systems would be an advantage.
