Targeting Myc pathways in cancer
Application deadline: 2012-02-09
Description of the research project
Cancer is a growing health problem that requires new knowledge and better therapies. To gain insight into the reason behind tumor development, molecular genetics have been instrumental. By inactivating so called tumor suppressor genes or hyper-activting genes known as oncogenes, cells can start to divide in an uncontrolled manner. One of the most frequently deregulated genes in human cancer is the MYC oncogene. When it becomes overexpressed it reprograms cellular metabolism, provokes genomic instability and drives cell proliferation, resulting in tumor progression. A new research group at the Institute of Clinical Sciences and the Sahlgrenska Cancer Center uses genetics to identify which genes regulated by/together with MYC that are needed by cancer cells. The long-term goal is to identify inhibitors against the gene products essential for tumor maintenance to devise new strategies to combat cancer.
To the new research group one doctoral student position is announced. Ideally the applicant has passed an advanced course in tumor biology. It is also desired that the applicant has previous experience with cell culture, mouse experiments or molecular biology techniques as documented in thesis or publications.
