The relationship between timing and articulatory precision in dysarthria and developmental fluency disorder
Application deadline: 2011-05-31
Description of the research project
The PhD project is part of a larger 5 year project (2011-2015) which aims are to (1) develop methods to investigate speech intelligibility, timing and articulatory precision and (2) analyze the relationship between the three concepts in a group of healthy control speakers as well as in six different populations. In all, 300 participants will be recorded performing the tests of intelligibility and timing, developed within the project. Data will be collected and analyzed in 2 different tracks, one including neurogenic speech disorders (Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, spinocerebellar ataxia) and one including speech disorders of structural or other origin (Cochlea implant, 22q11 deletion syndrome, developmental stuttering). Groups will be described and compared with respect to intelligibility and timing ability. To investigate articulatory precision, measures of vowel formants, voice onset time and F2 slopes will be measured for syllable repetitions across three different rates and also related to corresponding speech sounds in words and sentences (from the intelligibility test).
The present PhD-project will focus on the relationship between timing and articulatory precision in individuals with dysarthria and developmental fluency disorder and includes:
I A comparative investigation of timing in speech and finger tapping in adult control subjects
II An investigation of the relationship between timing and articulation in individuals Parkinson's disease, as compared to control subjects
III An investigation of the relationship between timing and articulation in individuals with developmental fluency disorder (stuttering), as compared to control subjects
IV Detailed descriptions of articulatory precision in different speech tempi, in individuals with Parkinson's disease and individuals with developmental fluency disorders
Desired background
Desired skills are knowledge in rehabilitation work, speech assessment, acoustic analysis and experience of working in a larger research project. As a PhD student, we expect you to acquire a good understanding of your research area and work with your supervisors and other collaborators to progress and develop your research projects. A capacity to take personal initiatives, spontaneously seek help when required, and work in a team of researchers is desired.
