Sahlgrenska akademin utlyser doktorandplatser med placering vid institutionen för odontologi, institutionen för biomedicin, institutionen för neurovetenskap och fysiologi och institutionen för medicin.
Doktorandplatserna avser två års utbildningsbidrag och två års doktorandanställning, alternativt fyra års doktorandanställning, och beräknas leda fram till doktorsexamen.

Patient autonomy in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A person-centered and real-time intervention

Description of the research project
The aim of the current project is to explore how Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects patients on a daily basis as well as longitudinally. An interactive and supportive communication tool will to this effect be employed in order to increase autonomy in patients with IBS. This will be done by means of helping patients to better understand, manage, and cope with their symptoms. The effectiveness of planned interventions will be evaluated in terms of outcome measures on physical and psychological symptoms pertinent to IBS.
The researcher working on this project will be responsible for collecting and analyzing quantitative outcome data pertinent to physical and psychological dimensions of IBS. This will be done in conjunction with the use of qualitative methods such as focus groups and interviews in order to capture the experience of living with IBS and using an interactive and supportive communication tool. As part of these endeavors it is important to build supportive and therapeutic relationships with patients. Psychological interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness have shown promising results in related research in the domain of IBS. The current research project is therefore aiming to employ methods that in part will be based on these approaches.
