The department of Product development, Production and Design (PPD) conducts education and research in areas such as product development, production development and industrial design. The department is responsible for four educational programs at Campus in Jönköping. In addition, PPD is also responsible for two education programs in Nässjö and Värnamo. The department has a strong engagement in the development of research and education within Knowledge Intensive Product Realization which is a strategic area at Jönköping University.
PPD is looking for a PhD student to get engaged with a variety of tasks including but not limited to the automation integration, robotic programming and simulation, safety assessment of automation cells, and flexible assembly operations, within a research project called SABACE. The PhD student will participate in strategic development of the production research at the department in close collaboration with industry to enhance national and international competitiveness within automation.
Work assignments
Your work involves activities related to studying, analyzing, and developing industrial frameworks that can be used in development of safe and sustainable automated assembly cells to increase productivity and improve performance in a mixed-model assembly system. To do so, you are expected to be able to work with a range of technologies such as robotics, robot tool design and prototype, vision systems, actuators, sensors, as well as simulation of production cells and processes. Other research activities related to production development, product realization, and automation could also be assigned to you.
As the strategic development of the Production Group is to contribute to industrial automation by directing its research towards advancement of causes within integration of product design and automation solutions, sustainability of production operations, and flexibility, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate with industrial companies located regionally and engage with them in department activities. You are also expected to support and inspire new research talents in the above-mentioned fields of research within grade and undergraduate levels. Other tasks, such as teaching, represent a maximum of 20% of the total working hours.
Qualifications
To be eligible for the position, you have a master's degree or have achieved at least 240 credits/ECTS, of which a minimum of 60 credits/ECTS must have been achieved at second cycle level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
A Master of Science degree in relevant engineering fields including Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering, Industrial Automation, with specific focused studies within Automation, Robotics, Assembly Systems, and Production Development is a requirement.
Master thesis work or final project work in Industrial Production, Automation/Robotics is expected.
Jönköping University has a clear international character, which also requires good written and communicative ability in English. Due to the collaboration with regional industry, a good level of the Swedish language, both written and oral, is expected.

It is meritorious if you have:
- Good programming skills in ABB Rapid
- Work experience in automation/robotics
- Good experience in academic writing and results dissemination
- Some teaching experience at university level
- Work experience in Production Systems
Information
We offer a fully financed full-time position which is limited in accordance with the applicable collective agreement for doctoral students. The start date of the employment is 10 April 2023 or by agreement.
The employment as a doctoral student normally covers five years, of which four years (80%) consist of full-time doctoral studies. The employment is extended annually based on the individual study plan. The salary is regulated according to a special doctoral student ladder. Annual working time for teachers according to the university's collective agreement.
