We conduct research across the themes of international and national policy intervention, urban governance and experimentation, business management and practice, and consumption governance.

Subject description

The IIIEE is looking to recruit a doctoral candidate to research sustainable consumption governance. This is to be done by participating in a 4-year research programme "Sustainable consumption - from niche to mainstream". The programme aims to stimulate a transition to sustainable consumption in Sweden and beyond by generating in-depth knowledge on how niche sustainable consumption practices can become mainstream in the areas of food, furnishing and vacation practices. This programme will explore three types of strategies that have been identified in the literature as key to enabling sustainable consumption: 1) the sharing of goods & services, 2) the downsizing of goods & services by consuming less, and 3) the shifting towards or development of more resource-efficient products & services.

The programme consists of the following work packages (WPs) that build upon each other: WP1: Mapping emerging sustainable consumption practices, WP2: Analysis of the potential and consequences of altered consumption practices, WP3: Citizen-Consumers, WP4: Innovative business models, WP5: Policy innovation and WP6: Synthesis and roadmaps.

Using a combination of methods for data collection and analysis, including case studies, focus groups, interviews, and expert panels, this research will provide a systematic, integrative and comparative analysis of sustainable consumption practices.

Work duties

The doctoral candidate will analyse niche sustainable consumption practices and provide recommendations for how sustainable niche practices can become more mainstream and how the transition to sustainable consumption practices can be accelerated by policy makers, businesses and citizen-consumers.
