The Production System Division is focused on excellent research and education for design, operation, and maintenance of production systems, aim for sustainable, digital, and competitive manufacturing. The division is an internationally diverse, gender-balanced, and inclusive team of 30 cross-disciplinary researchers and support staff. Our strong international collaborative networks and advanced research infrastructure, SII-Lab, makes us a competitive international actor.
About the research project
The research will be conducted on enabling the manufacturing industry to utilize Digital Twins for decision-making and for supporting design, operations, and maintenance of production systems. This will be achieved through hands-on academic and industrial collaboration across the value chain, by connecting data from databases, sensors, and machines to build a digital copy of the manufacturing environment, as well as linking the digital world back to the real production system for edits and updates, i.e., facilitating Digital Twins for manufacturing companies.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Mechanical engineering with focus on production systems or computer science with focus on software integration or data flows, or other similar topic.
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• Experience in IT/OT systems for manufacturing
• Designing production systems in 3D environments including simulation
• Sustainability knowledge on triple bottom line and circular economy
• Social aspects and equality in the manufacturing domain
What you will do
• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Product and production development at Chalmers
• Build and evaluate digital twins for production systems including back end data data flows as well as interfaces for decision makers together with other researchers and industry participants
• Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing

• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
Contract terms
• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
