Department of Conservation
The Department of Conservation offers professional degree programs and conducts research that focuses on cultural heritage issues, the built environment, craftsmanship, and conservation. The department operates in two different locations, Gothenburg and Mariestad. In Gothenburg we offer degree programs for building preservationists, conservators, and leaders in the fields of sloyd and traditional handicrafts. In Mariestad we offer programs in building construction, garden, and landscaping crafts. A key to our success is collaboration-among different areas of expertise within the department, and between the department and the surrounding national and international communities. Conservation requires expertise in a broad field of knowledge that includes subjects in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Conservation research has developed in a number of different areas and themes, including cultural heritage processes, the built environment, urban issues, landscapes, planning, management, preservation, documentation, craftsmanship, and design. The doctoral student who holds this position shall pursue a doctoral degree. The degree program comprises 240 credits, including coursework (minimum 60 credits) as well as a dissertation (minimum 120 credits). The working languages will be Swedish and English. The position may also include teaching and/or administrative work in the department, maximum 20% of full time. The addition of such responsibilities will confer a commensurate extension of the contract length for the position.
This doctoral student position is linked to the research projectMaintenance Matters: Exploring Heritage Evaluation in Everyday Contexts, which is funded by the Swedish Research Council. The point of departure for this project is the contemporary challenge of resource management. Maintenance, repair and preservation of the built environment are identified as key practices for sociomaterial sustainability. The doctoral thesis shall identify and explore caretaking measures directed towards any kind of built environment, as a matter of ethics. The research work is conducted within an interdisciplinary project group, and the doctoral student will develop her or his thesis in collaboration with the group.
For further information about the research project, see

The expectation on the holder of a doctoral position is that she or he shall develop the expertise and skill required to independently conduct research in conservation, and to contribute to the development of knowledge in the field by authoring and defending a scientific thesis for the doctoral dissertation. After graduation, she or he is expected to be able to translate the scientific skills and expertise developed in our program into continued research or qualified professional work.
Eligibility
To qualify for a position in the doctoral program, applicants must have a graduate-level degree in the field of conservation; or completed at least 240 credits of coursework, at least 60 of which are at an advanced level in the field of conservation; or in some other way attained an equivalent level of expertise relevant to successfully completing the doctoral degree program. Prior study in relevant fields to conservation will be counted. Thus an educational background in for example ethnology, cultural studies, social anthropology, human ecology, history of art and architecture, depending on the focus, may be considered relevant as qualification for this position.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in the Swedish Council for Higher Education's directive SFS 1993:100, chapter 5.
