Karolinska Institutet

Division
The goal of the Helleday laboratory is to develop novel anti-cancer drugs by exploiting cancer defects in DNA damage repair pathways. In order to do this, we have created an integrated translational strategy, with teams of scientists from a variety of disciplines taking our basic findings all the way from bench to bedside. We currently have labs at Science for Life Laboratory, Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, where we perform high-throughput screening, basic molecular/cell biology, biochemistry, systems biology and medicinal chemistry.

For a more comprehensive description of our different projects and an overview of our group, please visit our website www.helleday.org.

Duties
We seek one or two individuals within the fields of cell biology/assay development/screening/target validation/drug discovery. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and developing of biochemical and cell-based assays for compound optimization, be a core team member in our drug discovery projects and as such have biological responsibility for the project with the ultimate aim to develop prototype clinical candidates.

Activities include evaluating different assay formats and establishing screens to be used during lead generation and lead optimisation, keeping both quality and budget in mind. Furthermore, activities involving target validation and mechanism of action studies will also be included in the responsibility.

The work will be performed in a multidisciplinary project team and in close collaboration with other academic research groups and clinicians in Sweden. You will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality data in a timely manner, and work closely with medicinal chemists to enable iterative rounds of compound testing and compound optimisation. In addition to actively participating in research projects, some undergraduate-level teaching may be required. The position is based at the Department of Translational Medicine and Chemical Biology.

Entry requirements
Eligible applicants will have a well documented track record of relevance to the employment. The applicant should have a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology. Previous experience of cell-based assay development, screening and mechanism of action studies in an industrial setting is a requirement.  In addition, previous experience as a core team member and biological responsibility within a drug discovery project is a requirement. You will need a strong passion for daily experimental work and an aptitude for analysing, managing, interpreting and reporting data to the project team. Laboratory cell biology experience and an ability to troubleshoot screening equipment and assays will also be considered valuable as will previous experience in identifying novel targets for drug discovery. The successful candidate should have very good interpersonal and cooperation skills, be flexible and be capable of working in a structured and efficient way. The candidate should have excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

Application process
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.
