Electro or engineering physics students who are interested in a sustainable transportation system and the future power grid in Sweden.
Description of thesis work
Electrification of transportation is happening in many areas and is also moving into Volvo Pentas marine business. Unfortunately, electric drivelines, especially the battery is expensive. One interesting concept is to use the vessels battery as energy storage towards the grid.
Many vessels, leisure and some commercial, are used only a few hours per year, or have long periods of limited use. Eg leisure vessels in Sweden spend up to 9 months on land and when in the water are used only 40-80 hrs. Today it is possible to make money by lending your battery to the grid, could this help electrify vessels?
Aim
Determine the feasibility and potential of boat batteries as a part of the Swedish power grid in a mature electrified vessel fleet.
First step
Define the mature system, eg 15-20 in the future. Make suitable assumptions about battery sizes, number of vessels and their locations.
Second step (details set in dialogue)
Look at B2G part of future grid as energy storage and simulate possible profit from vessel batteries through grid support
Also take needed geographical aspects into account, estimate battery charging impact on the local grid in harbor and simulate how bi-directional charging/B2G can decrease this impact
