The Vehicle Aerodynamics and Thermal Management (RVAD) group at Chalmers is expanding its scope to encompass new areas central to the transition to a sustainable, fossil-free society and is seeking an Associate Professor or Assistant Professor in Heat Transfer. With our well-established scientific network, close ties to industrial partners, and commitment to develop innovative solutions, we provide an ideal platform for you to make real impact. You will be able to pursue your ideas within a collaborative and inclusive working environment at one of Scandinavia's top universities in the lively west-coast city of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The department and the research group
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport and is characterized by an international environment, outstanding research, and world-class education. It consists of seven divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

The division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems (VEAS) works with fundamental and applied research questions for vehicle or robot applications. Our aim is to provide solutions to problems of industrial and societal relevance using basic theory, modelling, and simulations. Our staff is responsible for 13 courses at Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels.

Fundamental fluid- and heat transfer problems form the base for all research in the RVAD group. Renowned internationally for our contributions to vehicle aerodynamics, brake cooling, underhood, and battery thermal management, we perceive thermal optimization as an evolving field with rapid technological advancements, especially amid the electrification of the transportation sector. Our interests span across battery and fuel cell heat management, utilization of AI techniques for enhanced modelling, interior climate control, acoustic effects on heat transfer, and exhaust heat recovery. All these areas require both fundamental understanding of heat transfer and the ability to propose new engineering solutions. In collaboration with colleagues from other divisions at our department, you will have the opportunity to apply your heat transfer knowledge to applications across all modes of transport (land, sea, air).

Job description
You will benefit from our robust foundation in applied thermal engineering to pioneer advancements in fundamental heat transfer within novel applications. Your responsibilities will involve participating in ongoing projects, but most significantly, actively securing funding for future projects both for yourself and for others (PhD students and post-docs). We expect a blend of creativity, focus, independence, and initiative, coupled with teamwork skills. You will supervise students across various academic levels and engage in project management to some extent. As member of the teaching faculty, you will be expected to teach approximately 20% of your total working time.

At Chalmers, we highly value utilization and academic citizenship. You will be expected to contribute to a positive and inclusive working environment, to participate in committees and councils, to serve as advisor to decision makers, and so on.

Your profile
You have a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or equivalent and solid knowledge in heat transfer and fluid mechanics. For the Assistant Professor post, the degree must not be older than 7 years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.

For the position as Associate Professor, you must meet the qualifications, experiences, and skills listed below:

-A good track record in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.
• A good track record regarding high-quality, independent scientific research.
• A good track record of successful grant applications.
• Experience with PhD student supervision.

For the Assistant Professor position, the above is not mandatory but meritorious. You should, however, demonstrate experience of applying for research funding.

Excellent command of English, both written and spoken is required.

* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
The position is aimed for Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. Associate Professor at Chalmers is a permanent faculty position. The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant Professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
