At AstraZeneca we win through science, it's at the heart of our every success. That science is only possible when we work together - we'll always make sure you're clear about how your role is connected to our wider mission to show what science can do.

Right now, we are seeking a highly motivated Associate Principal Scientist to join the Mechanistic Biology & Profiling Department within the Discovery Sciences R&D organization in Gothenburg, Sweden. You will apply proven biochemistry and cell biology expertise for characterization and profiling of the effects of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) treatment in in vitro biochemical and cellular assays. In doing so you demonstrate a passion for driving scientific questions, combined with strong team working ethics, to drug discovery projects.

In this position, you will join a team whose remit is to support our drug discovery projects globally with early DMPK assessment, SAR profiling and detailed mechanism of action data. We offer a highly rewarding scientific environment with ample learning opportunities and an expectation to publish new findings.

The role

This is a truly exciting senior lab-based role where you will operate in a close collaboration with scientists in the Oligonucleotide Discovery Department, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, DMPK and other R&D functions. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality data to build a detailed understanding of the relation between ASO exposure, bioavailability, and observed pharmacology in terms of their impact on cellular mRNA, protein levels and functional responses. The work includes independent planning and execution of experiments, troubleshooting and timely reporting of data according to agreed timelines. We will also rely on you to take an active role in the local and global leadership teams within the department as well as to lead multi-disciplinary initiatives and positively influence our continuous scientific development.

Essential Requirements:

* PhD complemented by at least 4 years' relevant postdoctoral experience or a first degree and at least 6+ years' experience within a relevant scientific discipline
* Extensive expertise in immunofluorescence techniques including confocal and non-confocal high-content imaging as well as image acquisition and analysis
* Significant experience with methodologies that allow measurements of transcripts and proteins with sub-cellular resolution
* Scientific visibility and leadership through project contributions and external publications
* Excellent communication skills and an ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment
* Independent analysis and evaluation of complex data and delivery of data to agreed timelines
* First-rate decision-making skills, coupled with tenacity to see decisions through, even in situations of ambiguity

Desirable Experiences and Abilities:

* Documented expertise in quantitative assessments of intracellular mRNA transcript and protein turnover, preferably using multiple techniques
* Demonstrated abilities in linking mRNA and protein levels and turnover to protein function
* Expertise in advanced image analysis, including proven deep learning and scripting applications
* Practical knowledge of detection technologies and technology platforms compatible with cellular assays, with emphasis on immunofluorescence, imaging, and flow cytometry
* Proven ability in providing technical leadership and guidance to others
* Track record of identifying and adopting scientific and technical advances
* Excellent problem-solving skills, not limited to own area of expertise

Does this sound like your next challenge? Please apply today!

We look forward to your application, but no later than the 15th May 2020.
