ESS now invites applications for the position Associate Director of Strategy, reporting directly to the Director-General of the project.
As part of the transition to initial operations, ESS is establishing a new strategy function to provide overall direction across the organisation and bring together activities in external relations, engagement with key external stakeholders, impact reporting, planning and strategy that are currently carried out across the organization. We are seeking to appoint an exceptional individual as Associate Director of Strategy who will help establish and define the roles and responsibilities for this new unit. This is a key appointment within the ESS' leadership and you will be a member of the ESS Executive Management Team (EMT). We are seeking a creative thinker and influential collaborator who has the experience, communication skills, intellect and political acumen to make an impact in a complex and constantly changing environment, and can help shape one of Europe's leading scientific research centres as it moves from construction into scientific operations.
Main responsibilities
Strategy
• Support the DG and senior leadership team in developing a strategic planning process for ESS, including the development of a long and medium-term vision
• Work closely with the ESS Management Team to identify key strategic activities and provide methodological support to complex internal and business projects as required
• Take responsibility for the strategic direction of externally funded projects (such as EU grants), working with the Science and Machine directorates to ensure they support the scope of ESS, and are coordinated with local structural funds
External Relations
• Stakeholder relations are crucial to the success of the facility and need to be structured and coordinated. Key stakeholders include the host states, member states, in kind partners, scientific partners, governance bodies, industry, universities, local schools, etc
• Responsibility for developing and implementing a framework of impact reporting to demonstrate and measure the scientific and socioeconomic impact of ESS
In-Kind Management
• Managing in-kind collaborations between partner institutes and ESS is key for the project and can be done in a standardised way through e.g. processes and procedure
• Strategic decisions regarding in kind set-up and model, IK coordination between partners and ESS' subprojects and work packages as well as tracking and reporting progress on agreements are all tasks that fall within this work
Leadership
• You and your future team will be responsible for both strategic and day-to-day tasks and functions. Your scope will include building, leading and coaching a dedicated team, most likely matrixed across the functions and activities of the Strategy unit, ensuring the team is efficient and responsive, and proactively prepared for future challenges and opportunities.
Qualifications
We believe you have a university degree in a relevant area of Science, Business, or Financial management, and will have the following track record;
• At least 10 years of experience in strategic management and business intelligence, including a significant period working in a large, complex, international and fast-paced organisation
• At least 5 years of proven experience leading and developing teams
• A proven track record in delivering change and working strategically with programs and policies
• Demonstrated experience of strategic planning in a scientific context, highly numerate and with strong analytical and writing skills
• Experience in facilitation, communication and presentation skills
• Demonstrated ability to organise and execute on a variety of assignments and action plans; driving for results and managing complex tasks
• A combination of strategic mind-set and operational and follow-up ability
• Experience from working in a similar scientific environment is essential
• Fluent in English with excellent writing skills, knowledge of Swedish and/or other European languages is an advantage

You have the ability to be responsive and persuasive at all levels of an organisation. As a leader you are balanced, driven and have the ability to coach your team and the management through complex issues and make recommendations that are consistent with strategies, policies, and procedures. Others would describe you as a dynamic, positive and flexible team player with a natural ability to lead others.
Duration & Location
The position is permanent and your work place will be Lund, Sweden.
