The unit for Hydrological Research works in Sweden, Europe and worldwide with developing Water and Climate services based on forecast and scenario tools. We calculate variability in water resources, climate change impacts, and water quality in catchments. The work done here aims to improve decision support for physical planning and environmental control, as well as forecasting for flood warning services and the hydropower industry. We work directly with both external end-users and SMHI's more operational divisions. The unit has some 30 employees from 13 countries.

We are now looking forward to employ three scientists with documented experience in climate/water research for developing our water and climate services. You will work in a team with guidance from a mentor and contribute to on-going projects with international collaboration in Europe and world-wide. Your work will mainly consist of method development and handling of large data volumes to be evaluated and used in applications for research. We have three open positions in the following topics:

Precipitation measurements from microwave links in telecom networks:

• Improve and evaluate algorithms to estimate rainfall, snowfall and fog from microwave links in telecommunication networks.
• A series of approaches will be explored such as real-time data fusion (e.g. using radar and gauge observations as well as meteorological forecast fields), machine learning, spectral analyses, spatial interpolation techniques, code optimisation for operational production, and uncertainty estimation.

Hydrological subseasonal to seasonal forecasting:

• Analyze forecasts (including multi-modelling) along the world's hydro-climatic gradient to improve the understanding of drivers that control the predictive skill
• Evaluate the hydrological skill by using new products for model initialization (data assimilation) or as meteorological forcing.

Assessment of water quality deterioration at the global scale:

• Model application and development regarding nutrients, sediments, organic carbon, water temperature, salinity and pathogens, using an existing dynamic hydrological model (HYPE).
• Calibration and evaluation of model results against measurements world-wide.

Please, indicate in the application which part you are most interested in. The work includes scientific analysis and writing of scientific papers.

The positions are temporary for 2 years, starting in May/June, with 100% working time and location in Norrköping.

Your Profile

We are looking for goal-oriented colleagues, passionate about their work, who likes to work both independently and with others. You should be a good communicator, in spoken and written English, with the ambition to learn Swedish within a year. Your background should include a Doctoral degree and education in statistics, spatial analysis and quality assurance is a merit. You should have good knowledge in programming linked to water/climate research and experience in handling big data. We value skills in giving presentations and lectures, team work, agile approaches and delivery of results in a timely and qualitative manner. You must already have a work permit for Sweden (this is the case for EU citizens).

Do you want more information?

Please contact the head of unit Berit Arheimer or human-resource specialist Karin Aspeqvist. Representatives from the labor union are Ronald Scheirer, ST, and Lennart Robertson, SACO. All are available on telephone +46 11 494 8000 or by e-mail Firstname.Lastnamn@smhi.se.
