Medicinal Chemistry within RIA is focused on the delivery of both Small Molecules and New Modalities (NM) such as peptides, oligonucleotides, conjugates etc to Clinical Development. The Physical & Analytical Chemistry team is crucial for achieving this - working in close collaboration with Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Design, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments who jointly aim at discovery of the respiratory medicines of the future. We are now looking for an experienced and dedicated Team Leader to manage and develop our Physical & Analytical Chemistry team.



Main Duties and Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team of excellent scientists across a very interesting portfolio of diverse synthetically accessible modalities - a truly rewarding scientific challenge!

The Associate Director of Physical & Analytical Chemistry leads a team of NMR and MS experts focused on analytics as well as experts in physicochemical profiling of Small Molecules and New Modalities. As an authority in the field of Analytical Chemistry, the candidate is expected to maintain our analytical research infrastructure and expertise state of the art, to develop the science around SM and New Modalities analytics to be fit for future purpose, and to continuously develop our people. The candidate provides expert advice in the characterization of SMs and large synthetic molecules and ensures effective collaboration between Analytical and Medicinal Chemists to ensure optimal project support across the RIA portfolio. The Team Leader, Physical & Analytical Chemistry reports to the Head of Medicinal Chemistry, RIA.



The role holder

* Leads a team of experts for Physical & Analytical Chemistry
* Optimal support of RIA 's drug discovery portfolio by developing SM and NM MS/NMR expertise and physicochemical profiling of SMs and NMs
* Develops team of Analytical Chemists and fit for future infrastructure
* Maintains a strong interface between Analytical Chemistry team, Medicinal and Computational Chemistry, purification labs and Pharmaceutical Science department
* Drives internal science in the field of Analytical Chemistry
* Initiates and leads collaborations with external experts
* Participates in global initiatives towards future development for Analytical Chemistry
* Maintains internal and external visibility of Analytical Chemistry through publications, conference presentations and participation in global AZ workstreams



Essential Requirements

For this managerial position the successful candidate has:

* PhD in chemistry or related scientific discipline
* In-depth scientific expertise and up-to-date knowledge of state of the art analytical and physicochemical methods
* Expert in NMR or MS spectroscopy, or related relevant field of expertise
* Expertise in New Modality analytics is a significant plus, but no must
* Strong scientific track record
* Demonstrated leadership skills and strong oral and written communication skills
* Experience in pharmaceutical drug discovery and development



Furthermore, you need to have excellent interpersonal skills, is approachable, and has the ability to prioritize workload and manage challenging staff situations. Coaching and motivating team members in their scientific development is an important part of the role as is the ability to collaborate in cross functional teams. The ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem-solving attitude and delivery focus is a must.
