hela Sverige Vattenfall Research and Development AB is a centre of competence for the R&D work performed by one the most exciting energy groups in Northern Europe. Vattenfall Research and Development conducts development projects in the Nordic countries, Poland and Germany, and has a total of some 190 employees. Our operations are focused on Älvkarleby and Stockholm in Sweden, Berlin in Germany and Fredericia in Denmark. We are in an interesting phase of development with a growing internationalisation of our activities.
Senior research engineer - Metallic materials
The group Power plant and Process technology works with research and development within the area of thermal processes. Examples of areas where we work are optimisation of combustion plants, CO2 capture and storage (CCS) and materials. Within the group, there are several people with material expertise working with components in power plants and for distribution of electricity. One important area is research concerning how to reduce corrosion in biomass- and waste fired power plants. Other areas are failure analysis and condition assessment in hydro power plants and development of methods for testing and maintenance. The goal with the material research is to extend the lifetime of components in plants and to find new materials that can withstand conditions caused by new fuels, higher temperatures or new processes.
It is expected that the area of material technology will be significantly developed during the coming years. The work with hydro power, thermal power, nuclear power and transmission will increase, and, above all, there is a need for material competence within power plants with CCS. Because of this, we need more competence within the material area and are looking for a senior research engineer that mainly will work with questions regarding solid fuel fired power plants and CCS.
Your responsibilities will be
• Research into components and materials in Vattenfall’s production plants. The main research areas concern steel and advanced materials and protective covers that can be used at elevated temperatures in power plants where creep strength and corrosion resistance are important properties. Special conditions prevail in CCS plants with Oxyfuel combustion where oxygen mixed with CO2 is used instead of air.
• Coordination of the material research within the CCS area.
• Manage failure analyses and condition assessment of components and to suggest measures to extend their lifetime.
• Plan and supervise testing at different plants, analyse and report results.
• Write reports and publications in both Swedish and English.
• Work as a project manager for development projects.
Qualifications
You have a degree equivalent to at least Master of Science in the material technology area, preferably complemented with a PhD degree or equivalent competence. Several years of experience from metallographic analyses are required as is experience from high temperature applications. Experience of non-destructive testing is desirable. Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is required, and knowledge of German is desirable.
Location
The place of work for this position is in Älvkarleby or Stockholm (Råcksta).
