Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences

The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment

Research at the Department covers functional microbial ecology, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, geochemical and hydrological processes, as well as aquatic environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, which together form a unique multidisciplinary and interactive centre of excellence in aquatic environmental research. The department consists of approximately 150 employees and has a national mission for monitoring the environmental status of lakes and watercourses. We both develop and operate advanced laboratories for chemical and biological analyses. The department offers education in environmental analysis, biology and chemistry at both undergraduate and advanced levels in educational programs for agronomist, bachelor's and master's degrees.

The position is placed at the division of microbial ecology. The division laboratories are located in the strong SLU Biocentre research environment (https://www.slu.se/biocentrum) with research in areas such as microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology, plant biology and aquatic biology. The Biocentre offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, including equipment for microscopy, metabolomics and molecular biology, as well as access to additional research infrastructure in molecular biosciences through SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se)

We collaborate with other departments at SLU, but also nationally and internationally with several strong research centres. Through our research and environmental analysis, we contribute with new socially relevant knowledge about how aquatic ecosystems change and what causes the changes.

SLU is a leading Nordic centre for ecological research and offers a dynamic and strong research environment with access to modern infrastructure, including field research stations and research vessels. SLU's faculty-wide initiatives create opportunities for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research.
