At Mälardalen University people meet who want to develop themselves and the future. Our 15 000 students read courses and study programmes in Business, Health, Engineering and Education. We conduct research within all areas of education and have internationally outstanding research in future energy and embedded systems. Our close cooperation with the private and public sectors enables us at MDH to help people feel better and the earth to last longer. Mälardalen University is located on both sides of Lake Mälaren with campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås.

At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, communications officers, network technicians and engineers. Here we have the research specialisations of Embedded Systems, and Innovation and Product Realisation. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

The position is to be hosted by Embedded Systems (ES), which is the most research-intensive research environment at MDH and a national leader in embedded-systems research. Research at ES has a dominating focus on embedded software, with world leading competence in embedded-software development and real-time systems modelling and analysis. Internationally, ES has extensive co-operation and is known for its research as well as its strong links with industrial partners, such as ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson, Scania and Volvo, as well as many smaller companies. ES provides a stimulating international research environment, characterized by its cooperative atmosphere, openness, and team spirit - a great environment for a researcher to grow in; with a mix of established and young researchers, several of which are employed or funded by industry.

Position description
The focus of this Researcher position is to conduct research into safety assurance in the context of reconfigurable future factories involving autonomous robots and humans.

The selected researcher will work in the project Future factories in the Cloud (FiC) funded by the Swedish Foundation for strategic Research and involves MDH (Project leader), Chalmers University of Technology, Uppsala University and the University of York (UK). We envision future factories being designed by compositions of smart connected components, with a large part of the intelligence residing in the Cloud. This will enable increased flexibility and evolvability of manufacturing, as well as pave the way for new business models where production facilities can be accessible as cloud services.

Moving a large part of the production complexity to the Cloud has benefits in cost, energy efficiency, sharing of resources, increased flexibility, adaptability and evolvability, and provide in general a strong basis for innovation. There are however associated challenges, including providing efficient and predictable (safe and secure) computation and communication, and coping with the huge amounts of data needed to provide the envisioned intelligence. These challenges are particularly demanding in safety-relevant systems, such as transportation and manufacturing.

The selected researcher will perform research on identifying threats to security as well as safety in futuristic factory contexts and develop methods and tools for assuring safety and security through appropriate mitigation strategies. Failure modes of technologies such as Fog and Edge computing needs to be appropriately characterized and modelled into assurance frameworks. The research will be based on real usage scenarios and results demonstrated and evaluated in industrial contexts.

The position is a temporary employment of 18 months.

Qualification requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in computer science or software Engineering.

A good understanding of analysis and assurance methodologies for safety is a prerequisite for this position. Software modelling and analysis skills, exposure to safety standards, highly developed communication skills, and experience of developing software tools are highly desirable. Experience in safety case argumentation using GSN or other formalisms will be considered as added merit. Experience in software development related to safety critical systems or certification using open source frameworks will be desirable.

Essential personal attributes for this position include attention to detail and commitment to high quality, collaborative ethos, interest in and enthusiasm for the subject matter of the project, positive attitude, and ability to plan and prioritize the own work in order to meet deadlines. You will have experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, and of writing up research work for publication in high-quality venues; and ability to work in a team, as well as independently using own initiative.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Merit
An interest to apply academic knowledge and to do research in collaboration with industrial partners as well as experience from working in projects that involve achieving both academic and industrial goals.
