Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies (WFE), SLU, Umeå, is looking for an ambitious, enthusiastic and creative researcher with strong interests in quantitative ecology and population modelling as applied to game management.
About the position
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing integrated models for estimating population densities of different wildlife species, particularly game. Currently, our department is tasked with estimating moose densities and developing an integrated population model for wild boar in a Bayesian framework. Important sources of data span hunters' observations, bag statistics and images from camera traps. You will lead this work, in collaboration with researchers in our department, as part of a strategic expansion in wildlife biology, monitoring and management. As this is a permanent position, you are expected to develop your own research applying quantitative methods to wildlife management in Sweden, and start new projects through applying for external funding. Our work is closely linked to game management, so you are expected to interact with authorities and stakeholders discussing results, interpretations and the requirements from management.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in ecology, population biology or statistics with a focus on quantitative methods. We are looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented candidate with documented experience with hierarchical models and Bayesian statistics. Experience with integrated population models will be a strong merit, as will a strong publication record. Experience from wildlife management, including hunting, and knowledge of the Swedish wildlife management system counts as a merit. An understanding of a Scandinavian language, or strong willingness to learn basic Swedish within the first 6 months, will be a merit.

About us
The department offers a creative, stimulating, and highly international environment and performs internationally recognised research, education and environmental monitoring in the research areas animal ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology and restoration ecology (see https://www.slu.se/en/departments/wildlife-fish-environmental-studies/research/research-areas/). The department has many international employees and well-established national and international collaborations, which gives opportunities for fruitful exchange.
