The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.
Several ongoing studies at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Gothenburg aim to develop new oral vaccines against diarrheal diseases and to identify immunological mechanisms that contribute to long-lived protective immunity after vaccination with both new and licensed vaccines. We are now recruiting a researcher with extensive experience of immunological analysis methods and interest in vaccinology and clinical studies to these projects.
Duties
The candidate will work in a collaborative environment, including researchers at the University of Gothenburg and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and an industrial partner. The project will provide good opportunities for further development of research competence in immunology, vaccinology and clinical studies. The work includes analysis of both B- and T-cell responses after administration of a new oral candidate vaccine against enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) bacteria and licensed vaccines against covid-19, with focus on long-term immunity and immunological memory. Techniques that will be utilized include flow cytometry, cell culture and assays based on electrochemiluminescence and ELISA. Microbiological analyses may also be used. The job assignments include experimental work, establishment and validation of new laboratory methods, data analysis, organization of sample collections and results. The candidate is also expected to write manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
Qualifications
A doctoral degree is compulsory for the position. The candidate should have a strong background in immunology. Extensive practical experience of immunological analysis methods and cell culture techniques is essential. Experience of flow cytometry, clinical studies as well as first author publications are important merits. Experience of bacteriological analyses is an additional merit. The candidate is expected to have good collaborative skills and well-documented ability to present scientific results both orally and in writing. Good knowledge of English is compulsory for the position and knowledge of Swedish is desirable. The applicant is expected to independently plan, conduct and document experiments performed alone or in collaboration with other researchers and technical personnel. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for the project.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 11 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
